PolicyLink

Client Challenges: In 2003, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation asked PolicyLink to identify ways to engage more leaders of color in policy change. At that time, PolicyLink had a tremendous amount of in-house expertise in the area of research and in advancing policies to achieve economic and social equity. However, to address the request made by the Hewlett Foundation, PolicyLink elected to augment its in-house team with an expert in nonprofit leadership development, and called upon Putnam for assistance.
Putnam Contributions: Putnam had already assisted several other foundations in creating leadership development programs, so was more than qualified to help PolicyLink with its project. We worked closely with the PolicyLink team to review current literature in the area of leadership development and conduct extensive interviews. Putnam then collaborated with PolicyLink staff to analyze findings and prepare the final report which PolicyLink submitted to The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
Project Outcomes: The final report for this project was delivered in early 2003. Entitled Leadership for Policy Change: Strengthening Communities of Color Through Leadership Development, the report explores the field for leadership development among communities of color and recommends specific steps to take to improve the ability of these communities to impact policies.
